A Black trans wizard is whisked away to a magical school and learns that it’s not as magical as it seems.

Jes Freeman is a Black trans woman who is about to start college. She raps, produces music, plays DnD, is a huge fantasy nerd, and hasn’t come out to her parents. As she discovers her magic, she is transformed into the woman she’s known herself to be and given the opportunity to stay this way at The Sanguine University of Magic. Alongside new friends, Tierra, Jacque and Gabe, she will discover that this magical university might not be as magical as it seems. Corruption bleeds from Sanguine University and as Jes, Tierra, Jacque and Gabe see how deep it runs in policy and the very foundations of the school, they must “fight the power” and challenge the status quo.

  • Jes Freeman

Born and raised in Atlanta and proud of it; she's trans, not a transplant. A lover of hip hop, she raps and produces. A lover of fantasy, she plays DnD and also happens to be a wizard. When she first discovers her magic, she is transformed and whisked away to The Sanguine University of Magic. A freshman learning how to be a wizard, she will discover that her school might not be as magical as it seems.

  • Tierra Wright

A Savannah, Georgia girl with a strong line of women ahead of her, she looks to the stars and sees a future as an artist. Hoping to tell the story of her granny, she’d planned to go to art school, but the full moon revealed another path as she was teleported to a fantastical world full of magic and possibility. At The Sanguine University of Magic, she is going to learn to draw using the stars.

  • Jacque Blaise

A boy from Haiti trying to figure out his place in the world, the stars leave him with more questions than answers. The world is too big and too small at the same time; full, yet isolating. Discovering his own magic and attending The Sanguine University of Magic may leave him with more questions but it will also be an adventure helping him make sense of the contradictions.

  • Gabriel Luna

Raised catholic in Mexico, Gabriel told his family who he was and found rejection in everyone except his abuela. Her love and support kept him steady. When the world was intolerant, she was there with open arms. She empowered him to carry himself proudly. When he found his magic under a full moon and found himself at The Sanguine University of Magic, he carried her love with him.

  • Dean Rowe-Fare

The dean of The Sanguine University of Magic, she answers only to the board of trustees. There are few things at the university that she couldn't change if she wished. Her commitment to the status quo has made her complacent. Older than the university itself, she was part of its creation; her magic has granted her a long life of power. She sees the campus as a reflection of her and for the university to change, she must change.
